As someone who has spent 15 years soaring through the skies, navigating the intricate dance of aircraft, wings, and engines, I have had the privilege of witnessing the world from a cockpit. It is a place where clouds become companions, and horizons stretch endlessly.

However, life, similar to a flight plan, is a series of waypoints, and sometimes, we need to pause, recalibrate, and rewrite our trajectory. Covid-19 has forced the world to take a break, and it has made us realize the importance of taking a step back and reflecting on our actions.

Therefore, let me take you on a journey, from my career in aviation to the classroom, and finally, to the world of sustainability consulting.

Journey 1: The Aviation Odyssey – The Thrill of Takeoff

My journey in aviation started with awe and fascination. The excitement of lifting off the ground and the adrenaline rush of gaining speed were both exhilarating experiences for me. Being an aviator, I have faced different challenges and obstacles but have always persevered and have been able to soar high in the sky.

  • The Altitude Plateau –

After spending years flying at high altitudes, I started feeling a desire for something more. The aviation industry has faced several challenges such as economic downturns, fuel crises, and environmental concerns. I began to wonder whether aviation could be sustainable. Is it possible to fly without leaving a carbon footprint? The search for sustainable solutions has given rise to innovative designs that could revolutionize the aircraft of the future. Airbus has taken a risk by exploring hydrogen-powered planes, leading to the emergence of concepts that seem straight out of science fiction – like the Blended-Wing Body ZEROe, where form meets function in a dance of efficiency and eco-consciousness.

Journey 2: The Career Break- The Decision to Descend

I decided to take a career break and start afresh. I left my job and decided to pursue academics at Cranfield University. The university provided a platform for me to expand my knowledge beyond the world of aviation. I was excited to learn and explore new ideas in lecture halls and research labs.

During my time at Cranfield University, I dedicated myself to studying green finance and sustainability. The classroom became my platform for exploring new ideas, and I was able to chart a new course by learning about ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) factors, impact investing, and the power of capital flows. However, it wasn’t just about theoretical knowledge; it was about putting that knowledge into action and making a real-world impact.

One fateful night at a crowded university party, I met an entrepreneur who shared my passion for sustainability. We had a lot in common (uncommon too), including a desire to make a positive impact and a sense of urgency about the need for change. As we chatted over coffee, our ideas collided, sparking a vision for a sustainability consulting company as founders that could help businesses become more environmentally friendly. And so, SCORR LTD was born.

Then came the sustainability challenge, where SCORR had the opportunity to participate in a university sustainability challenge, where students came together to tackle real-world problems. It was an exciting journey where we collaborated, brainstormed, and worked hard to find solutions to complex issues. We examined supply chains, analyzed carbon footprints, and dreamed of a more sustainable future.

The Birth of SCORR LTD (Our consulting firm), has since then taken flight armed with knowledge and passion. Our purpose is to guide companies towards sustainability, one decision at a time. Here’s how we achieve it:

Sustainability Assessments: We assess companies’ current state regarding sustainability, just like pre-flight checks, to identify areas for optimization.

Goal Definition: Like pilots who set waypoints, we define sustainability goals, including net-zero emissions and circular economy practices. We plot the course toward a better future.

Road Mapping: Our sustainability roadmaps align with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to navigate towards a better future.

Strategy Implementation: We implement strategies such as energy optimization, waste reduction, and green technologies, much like a well-executed landing.

Collaboration and Impact: We collaborate with industry leaders, investors, and innovators to pioneer climate innovations, restore ecosystems, and accelerate change. We don’t see ourselves as consultants; rather, we are co-pilots on a mission.

Conclusion

My journey has been like a roller coaster ride, taking me from the skies to the world of sustainability. It has been about finding my purpose and making an impact. When I look back, I realize that every flight, every storm, and every decision led me to where I am today, at the intersection of aviation and sustainability. Whether you are a pilot, a student, or a dreamer, always remember that the journey of life is long, but having a purpose fuels it.

Bon voyage😊🌿🌎 #RoohiBali (Co-Founder, SCORR Ltd)
