Description

Madur Grass:
Madur grass, also known as madurkathi, is a sedge (Cyperus pangorei or Cyperus tegetum) used to make traditional mats called “madur” or “chatai”. It’s a key part of the weaving craft in West Bengal, particularly in the Midnapore district. Madurkathi is a rhizome-based plant that thrives in marshy, alluvial land. It’s found abundantly in the Purba and Paschim Medinipur districts. The grass is woven into mats, which are commonly used as floor coverings, sleeping mats, Placemats and decorative items. Madur weaving is an ancient craft with roots in the Indus Valley Civilization, making it an integral part of Indian culture, especially in West Bengal. The grass is grown in the swampy areas of Midnapore, West Bengal, making it a local resource for weaving and a significant part of the region’s economy. Due to frequent flooding in the Medinipur area, madurkathi and other similar grasses provide a viable alternative for farmers.
